COSTEL VASILESCU was born and grew up in Romania. He studied medicine there and ultimately become a specialist plastic surgeon.

An invitation to visit the Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit in Edinburgh, Scotland, afforded him the excuse to leave Romania. His decision not to return to Romania meant years as a junior doctor in British hospitals while he passed the necessary examinations to again become a specialist plastic surgeon.

In 1978 Dr Vasilescu settled in Townsville, Australia, where he set up in private practice. The following year he was appointed as the first Plastic Surgeon at Townsville General Hospital, a post he held until his retirement in 1993. Costel and his wife Nita still live in Townsville, which they regard as home
